There he stands,
A pillar of honesty and integrity,
Well known and respected by all,
The symbol of an idealistic society.

But a cog has fell,
And slowly, but assuredly,
Is destroying the well-polished machine,
Undetectable from the outside.

Years and years pass,
And the machine continues on,
Efficiency slows; more wood is thrown onto the fire,
Only a few have heard a cog fall.

They hear it fall,
But it’s dismissed;
A pillar doesn’t fall,
It endures through time.

But erosion has occurred,
The small cog that once failed,
Destroys the machine,
The everlasting symbol of society.

The machine, running hard,
Falls and breaks,
Never again to be rebuilt,
Only to erode.
